Watching TV is far more interesting than doing exercise, everyone knows that! But you need to limit yourself to a couple of hours a day doing these fun effortless things.
Tell yourself that you are not going to spend more than 2 hours a days doing the following:
- Watching TV/Videos/DVDs
- Playing games on your computer
- Using a mobile phone to text or play games.
Instead, try to get active:
- Play out with friends in your garden while it's still light
- Go for a walk with an adult or for a short walk around your street if it is safe to do so (ask an adult who is in charge)
- Play sports like rounders (click the word to learn how to play) ,tick rugby, cricket or 5 a side football in your garden. (more information about how to play these games can be found below)
- Join up to an after school club, maybe to dance or learn karate. There's loads of activities to choose from and you'll love learning new skills.
There's a lot of small things you can do which will help you get more active. It might not seem like you're doing a lot different but you're really helping your heart if you start to get more exercise. Try to do some of the following each week.
- If you usually get a lift to school, ask if you can walk with a group of friends or another adult. Just a few minutes walking each day will help you get healthy quickly.
- If you have a bike, go for bike rides with an adult. (Please click on the links at the bottom of this page for more information about bike safety and laws.)
- Make up dances with your friends. Put a CD on and each come up with a dance for certain parts of the song. Depending on how many of you there are, person 1 could make up the dance to the first 50 seconds, person 2 could do the next 50 seconds and person 3 could do the last 50 seconds. Then teach each other your parts and watch yourselves in the mirror, you'll have fun and you can be as serious or daft as you want!
- Use your dancemat! This way you can have your playstation on and dance along whilst keeping fit.
- If you do get a bit of pocket money, go swimming with your friends or family. You can have fun whilst building up muscles and learning too.
